Low scoring thriller; Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central shuts out Maple City Glen Lake for division six title

The last time Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (SMCC) made a trip to Ford Field they were tasked with taking down arguably the best team in MHSAA history in Ithaca who had won 69 consecutive games.

SMCC would take down Ithaca and struggle to return to Ford Field.

This trip was a little less of a task for SMCC (12-1) as they took down Maple City Glen Lake (12-2) 7-0 in the division six state final.

The Falcons would run it down the throat of Glen Lake and play outstanding defense to bring home their third state title in school history.

“The defense has been coming up big for us lately,” SMCC head coach Adam Kipf said. “We made some big plays defensively.”

The Falcon defense held Glen Lake to 127 yards in the shutout victory. Glen Lake was also averaging nearly 34 points per game coming into the state finals.

SMCC had a few risky calls as they did go for it facing 4^th-and-2 in their own territory, the Falcons would convert an continue to control the time of possession.

“We’ve been doing that all year,” Kipf said. “Our backs are tremendous blockers as well as runners and the alley just opened up.”

SMCC ran for 249 yards and held the ball for just over 31 minutes. The Falcons were led by Alex Morgan who rushed for 123 yards.

“We have faith in our defense and the other players on this team,” Wyatt Bergmoser said. “It’s such a good feeling (winning a state title).”

Bergmoser scored the only touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a six-yard run. Bergmoser ran for a total of 39 yards on 12 carries.

“I was here in 2014 for that championship game,” Bergmoser said. “I knew one day I wanted to be here.”
